GKS Scholarship 2027 University Track vs Embassy Track: Which One Should You Choose?

The GKS Scholarship 2027 offers international students two main application routes for undergraduate studies in South Korea: the Embassy Track and the University Track.

Both routes lead to the same fully funded Global Korea Scholarship, but their application methods, available programs, university choices and selection stages are different.

Choosing the right track is an important decision. This guide compares the GKS Scholarship 2027 University Track vs Embassy Track and explains the advantages and disadvantages of each route.

GKS Scholarship 2027 Track Overview

According to the official 2027 undergraduate guidelines, a total of 286 scholars will be selected.

What Is the GKS Scholarship 2027 Embassy Track?

Under the Embassy Track, applicants submit their applications through the official Study in Korea online system. The Korean embassy responsible for the applicant’s country conducts the first round of selection.

The Embassy Track includes the following programs:

  • General Program
  • R-GKS Program
  • Overseas Koreans and Adoptees Program

For 2027, the Embassy Track offers 156 places across 74 countries.

Embassy Track application period

The official online application period is:

September 15, 2026, at 11:00 to September 30, 2026, at 18:00, Korean Standard Time

Applicants must complete the online application and upload the required documents through the Study in Korea website.

How Many Universities Can Embassy Track Applicants Choose?

The number of available choices depends on the Embassy Track program.

General Program

Applicants may select up to three universities from the approved Type A and Type B institutions.

At least one selection must be a Type B university.

R-GKS Program

R-GKS applicants may select up to two universities, and both must be Type B regional universities.

Applicants must use the exact university and department names shown in the official University Information file.

Embassy Track Selection Process

The Embassy Track normally involves three selection rounds:

  1. First-round evaluation by the Korean embassy
  2. Second-round evaluation by NIIED
  3. Third-round admission evaluation by the selected Korean universities

Passing the embassy and NIIED rounds does not automatically guarantee admission. Applicants must still receive acceptance during the university evaluation round.

Advantages of the Embassy Track

More university choices

Eligible General applicants can select up to three universities, while R-GKS applicants can select up to two.

This gives applicants some flexibility if one university does not accept them.

More program options

Depending on the applicant’s nationality and eligibility, the Embassy Track includes General, R-GKS and special categories for Overseas Koreans and Adoptees.

Centralized online application

The initial application is completed through the Study in Korea online system during one official application period.

Opportunity to apply through the University Track later

According to the guidelines, applicants who do not pass the first Embassy Track round may apply through the University Track if the relevant university deadline is still open.

Applicants should check the university deadlines in advance because some may close before Embassy Track results are announced.

Read the complete GKS Scholarship 2027 application guide before submitting your application.

Disadvantages of the Embassy Track

More selection rounds

Embassy Track applicants must pass the embassy, NIIED and university evaluations.

The longer selection process can involve more uncertainty.

Country quotas can be limited

Each participating country receives a limited quota. Applicants compete primarily within their country during the first round.

Popular universities can be highly competitive

The guidelines warn that applications may be heavily concentrated at particular universities. An applicant could pass the second round but fail to receive admission from their selected universities.

Type B selection is compulsory

General applicants must include at least one Type B university. R-GKS applicants can only choose eligible Type B universities.

What Is the GKS Scholarship 2027 University Track?

Under the University Track, applicants submit their application directly to one participating Korean university.

Applicants must follow that university’s application method, document requirements and deadline.

The University Track includes:

  • UIC Program
  • Associate Degree Program

UIC Program

UIC stands for University Industry Cooperation.

It offers bachelor’s and associate degree programs focused mainly on science and engineering. The program includes university-industry cooperation, practical experience and support related to settlement and employment.

UIC is open to applicants from countries worldwide.

Associate Degree Program

The separate Associate Degree category offers 30 places through nine participating institutions. Country eligibility conditions shown in the official guidelines apply.

University Track Application Period

University Track applications generally take place between September and November 2026.

However, there is no single deadline for every university. Applicants must check the official announcement of the university they plan to apply to.

Each institution may have a different:

  • Application deadline
  • Submission method
  • Department list
  • Language requirement
  • Additional document requirement
  • Interview procedure

How Many Universities Can University Track Applicants Choose?

University Track applicants may select only:

  • One university
  • One department

Applicants cannot submit University Track applications to multiple universities or departments.

Submitting duplicate applications can result in disqualification and cancellation of the scholarship if discovered later.

University Track Selection Process

The University Track normally involves two main evaluations:

  1. First-round selection by the Korean university
  2. Second-round evaluation by NIIED

Unlike the Embassy Track, there is no separate third-round university admission evaluation because the university evaluates the candidate during the first round.

Review the documents required for GKS Scholarship 2027 before sending original or authenticated documents.

Advantages of the University Track

Direct application to a university

Applicants submit their documents directly to the institution offering their chosen program.

This can make the application more focused for candidates who already know exactly where and what they want to study.

Fewer selection stages

The University Track does not include the third-round university evaluation used in the Embassy Track.

UIC is open worldwide

Applicants from countries without an allocated Embassy Track quota may still be able to apply through the UIC Program.

Specialized programs

UIC can be attractive to applicants seeking science, engineering, technology and industry-linked programs.

Different university deadlines

Because deadlines vary, some applicants may have additional time to prepare. However, this depends entirely on the chosen university.

Disadvantages of the University Track

Only one university and department

Applicants must place their entire application on one university and one department.

If the application is unsuccessful, there are no alternative university choices within that submission.

Limited program selection

University Track applicants can only apply to the UIC or Associate Degree programs and participating institutions listed in the official documents.

Different procedures at every university

Applicants must carefully research the chosen university’s application method, deadline and additional requirements.

Original documents may be required early

Universities may require physical application documents, authenticated certificates or sealed recommendation letters during the initial application stage. Applicants must follow the chosen institution’s instructions.

Which GKS Scholarship 2027 Track Should You Choose?

Consider the Embassy Track if:

  • Your country has an Embassy Track quota
  • You want to select more than one university
  • Your intended major is available through the General or R-GKS program
  • You are comfortable completing multiple selection rounds
  • You want some flexibility in your university choices

Consider the University Track if:

  • You have already selected one specific university and department
  • Your intended course is available through UIC or the Associate Degree program
  • Your country has no allocated Embassy Track quota, but you are eligible for UIC
  • You prefer to apply directly to a university
  • You are comfortable relying on one university choice

Important Duplicate-Application Rule

Applicants cannot apply through both tracks simultaneously.

An Embassy Track applicant who passes the first round, including a backup candidate, cannot apply again through the University Track.

Applicants who fail the Embassy Track first round may apply through the University Track only if the chosen university is still accepting applications.

Final Thoughts

The Embassy Track provides more university choices and several program categories, but it includes more evaluation stages and country-specific competition.

The University Track offers a direct and focused application route, especially through UIC, but applicants are limited to one university and one department.

Your decision should be based on your nationality, academic field, preferred university, available program and confidence in committing to one institution. Carefully check the official university list and country quota before choosing your route.
