GKS Scholarship 2025 Objective

The Global Korea Scholarship aka GKS Scholarship 2025 offers international students the chance to study at top universities in Korea, helping them pursue academic degrees while promoting global educational exchange and fostering stronger friendships between Korea and participating nations.

Period of Scholarship

Bachelor’s Degree Program: 5-7 years
1 year of Korean language training + 4~6 years of degree program

Associate Degree Program: 3-4 years
1 year of Korean language training + 2~3 years of degree program

The GKS Scholarship 2025 is without a doubt, one of the world’s most prestigious scholarships. It covers airfare and tuition and provides a monthly stipend of over 1,000,000 KRW with other incentives including:

Eligibility Criteria for GKS Scholarship 2025

  1. Nationality:
    Applicants must be citizens of countries designated by NIIED and invited to participate in the GKS program.
  2. Education:
    • Bachelor’s Degree Program: Open to students who have graduated (or will graduate) from high school or an associate degree program.
    • Associate Degree Program: Open to students who have graduated (or will graduate) from high school.
      Note: Applicants who expect to graduate must submit a certificate of expected graduation during the application process. If selected in the first round, they must submit their official graduation certificate by December 31, 2024.
  3. GPA Requirements:
    Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • A score percentile of 80% or higher on a 100-point scale, or ranking in the top 20% of their class.
    • A cumulative GPA of at least 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5, or 3.23/5.0.
  4. Age:
    Applicants must be under 25 years old (born after March 1, 2000).
  5. Health:
    All applicants must be in good physical and mental health to complete their studies in Korea.

Note: Applicants with a bachelor’s degree are not eligible. Those with an associate degree can only apply for a bachelor’s program.

GKS Scholarship 2025 Undergraduate Quota

This year, a total of 367 students from around the world will be invited to participate in the GKS Scholarship 2025 Undergraduate for both Associate and Bachelor’s degree programs.

Of these, 87 students will be selected through the Embassy Track, while 280 students will be chosen through the University Track.

Important Notes for GKS Scholarship 2025

[Embassy Track]

  • Applicants can select up to THREE different universities.
  • You cannot choose three different departments within the same university.
  • At least one of the selected universities must be a Type B university.
  • If you list a Type A university in the Type B section, your application might be excluded from evaluation.

[University Track]

  • Applicants must choose just ONE university in their application.

Additional Points for GKS Scholarship 2025:

  • Applicants with a TOPIK level 3 or higher will earn extra points, making up 10% of the total points available.
  • Direct descendants of Korean War veterans who served in the Korean War as foreign military personnel will receive an additional 5% of the total points.
  • Extra points will be awarded based on proficiency in Korean and English:
    • Korean: Points are given according to the level of the TOPIK certificate.
    • English: Points are given based on scores from valid English proficiency tests (TOEFL, IELTS).

Evaluation Preference

  • Overseas Koreans
  • Applicants from low-income families or underprivileged background
  • Applicants who submit a high score of English proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS)
  • Applicants who applied for a science and engineering departments
  • (Relevant to associate degree applicants) Winner of a national level competition on technical
    skills

In 2024, the Korean Government invites up to 2,200 students globally, welcoming them to pursue their studies in South Korea through the GKS Scholarship Graduate Programs, which include Masters, Doctoral, and Research programs. Benefits of GKS Scholarship 2024 Graduate

The 2024 GKS Scholarship stands out as a globally renowned award, offering more than just airfare and tuition coverage. Recipients also receive a generous stipend, free Korean language training, degree completion grant, thesis printing fee and comprehensive medical insurance.

Here’s a glimpse of the benefits of the GKS Scholarship 2024 Graduate Program.

1) Airfare:

  • Economy class flight ticket (actual expense)

2) Free Tuition

  • NIIED: up to 5 million KRW
  • University: amount that exceeds 5 million KRW, Admission fee

3) Korean Language Training Fee

  • 5.2 million KRW (four quarters)

4) Study Incentive

  • Korean language program: 14,100,000 KRW per year
  • Graduate Degree program: 15,700,000 KRW per year
  • Research Program: 19,800,000 KRW per year

Study Incentive :

All-inclusive subsidy of Settlement Allowance, Monthly Allowance, Research Allowance, Korean Proficiency Grants, TOPIK Application Fee, Degree Completion Grants, Medical Insurance, and Publication Printing Fee.

Korean Proficiency Grant:

GKS Scholars who will be initially exempted from the Korean language program with TOPIK level 5 or 6 will be given Korean Proficiency Grants automatically. (except for GKS scholars in the Global Network program, Research program, and Japanese applicants)

GKS Scholarship 2024 Benefits

Important Notes regarding Scholarship Benefits 

– If a GKS scholar withdraws from the scholarship within the first 3 months after the enrollment to their university, one MUST return the full scholarship amount that he or she has received after being selected as a GKS scholar (entry airfare, settlement allowance, monthly allowance, tuition, etc.) 

– Even if 3 months have passed since entering Korea, if the scholarship status changes, part of the already paid scholarship can be refunded or can be deducted from the next payment 

– Korean Language Training Fee and Korean Proficiency Grants are not provided to GKS scholars in Research program 

– Korean Language Training Fee is not provided to GKS scholars in Global Network program

Things to note when submitting application documents for GKS 2024 Graduate:

  • All documents must be submitted in English or Korean 
  • Each embassy/university may modify documentation requirements at their own discretion* 
  • One letter of Recommendation* must be prepared and submitted by applicant* Signed and sealed by your supervisor, dean or professional in the field of your desired study 
  • Applicants should check with the embassy/university for detailed information on application submission 

Application documents for the SECOND round of selection 

  • Successful candidates of the first round must meet the submission requirements for the second round 
  • If any of the required documents are not submitted or if any of the application forms are submitted without applicant?s signature, his or her application documents may be excluded from evaluation 
  • All application materials submitted to NIIED will NOT BE RETURNED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES 
  • If a university requires additional documents (e.g., portfolio), applicants must submit those materials directly to the university

GKS 2024 Eligibility Criteria for Graduate Program

Global Korea Scholarship for Graduate program has been announced. Please find below the detailed GKS 2024 Eligibility Criteria and make sure that you go through this article in detail before applying for the scholarship.

1 – Nationality

All applicants must hold citizenship of NIIED designated countries that are invited to take part in the GKS program of Education

2 – Level of Education

Important Note:

  • Applicants who are expected to graduate by July 31st, 2024 can also apply for the program with a certificate of expected graduation.
  • Such applicants must submit their official graduation certificate (or diploma) and final academic transcript to GKS Center, NIIED by July 31st, 2024. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of your acceptance

3 – Grades

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of the entire curriculum from the previous degree program* must meet one of the conditions below; 
(For example, previous degree for a doctoral degree program applicant is a master?s degree program)

  • Score percentile should be 80% or above on a 100-point scale or be ranked in the top 20% of one’s class 
  • CGPA must be equal to or above 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5 or 3.23/5.0 

4 – Age

  • Must be under 40 years of age (born after September 1, 1984)
  • Academic professors in one of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) recipients* who are under 45 years of age (born after September 1, 1979) are eligible to apply. DAC List of ODA Recipients on 2024 and 2025 flows (www.oecd.org)

5 – Health

All applicants must be in good health, both mentally and physically, to study in Korea for the full duration of the program.

Note: Duplicate Submission 

  • Embassy track candidates (including reserve candidates) who passed the first round of selection cannot apply again through a university track 
  • Embassy track applicants must apply to only one program among General, Overseas Korean, International Reconstruction Talent program 
  • University track applicants must apply to only one program among General, R-GKS, International Reconstruction Talent, Global Network, R&D and Research program 
  • University track applicants must apply to only one department per university 

? Duplicate submissions will be disregarded in the evaluation. If found afterwards, scholarship will be cancelled even after the evaluation is completed.

GKS Scholarship 2024 will be announced very soon. Usually, the applications are open in the last week of February every year, so you still have one month to prepare in advance. This year again, the scholarship will be opened for Masters degree, Phd degree and for research programs.

There will be two tracks to apply:

1- Embassy Track
2- University Track

Eligibility Criteria for GKS 2024

Nationality:

  • Citizens of designated countries by NIIED are eligible.
  • Parents must hold citizenship outside Korea.

Degree Requirements:

  • Master’s Program: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Doctoral Program: Master’s degree or equivalent.
  • Applicants must have obtained the required degree (minimum level of education indicated above) by February 28, 2024.

Grades:

  • CGPA conditions for both masters and doctoral program applicants.
  • Score percentile should be 80% or above on a 100-point scale or be ranked in the top 20% of one’s class
  • CGPA must be equal to or above 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5 or 3.23/5.0
  • Applicants must submit an academic transcript with CGPA or ranking information
  • If a transcript does not provide CGPA in any one of the accepted GPA scales (4.0, 4.3, 4.5, 5.0 or 100 point scale), then the applicant must submit a transcript converted into one of the above GPA scales as a supplementary document

Age:

  • Applicants must be under 40 (born after September 1, 1984).
  • Academic professors in ODA recipients can apply up to 45 years (born after September 1, 1979).

Health:

  • Applicants must be in good mental and physical health throughout the program.

1- Embassy Track:

This year, 86 students from all over the world will be selected via Embassy Track. Each country has its own quota. For ex:

  • Bachelor’s degree program is for applicants who graduated (or are expected to graduate) from a high school or from an associate degree program
  • Associate degree program is for applicants who graduated (or are expected to graduate) from a high school

    Note: Applicants who are expected to graduate must first submit a certificate of expected graduation at the time of application. If such applicants pass the first round of selection, they must submit a graduation certificate (or a degree certificate) by December 31, 2023

3- Score (GPA)

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of the entire curriculum from the previous (degree) program must meet one of the two conditions below;
– Score percentile should be 80% or above on a 100-point scale or be ranked within the top 20% within one’s class

  • Applicants can choose up to THREE different universities
  • Applicants cannot choose three different departments from a single university
  • Of the chosen universities, at least one university must be from Type B universities
  • If applicants fill out a Type A university in a Type B section, their application may be excluded from the evaluation


[University Track]

  • University track applicants should fill in ONE university in their application.

Additional Points:

  • Applicants who hold a TOPIK level 3 or above will be given additional points (10% of the total allocated points)
  • Direct descendants of Korean War veterans who participated in the Korean War as a foreign military will be given additional points (5% of the total allocated points)

Applicants will receive additional points based on language proficiency in Korean and English

  • Korean: points will be given to applicants with valid TOPIK certificate based on their TOPIK level
  • English: points will be given to applicants with valid English proficiency certificate based on their test scores (TOEFL,IELTS)

Global Korea Scholarship GKS 2023 – Graduate

The National Institute for International Education Development (NIIED) has recently released the application guidelines for the GKS 2023 i.e 2023 Korean Government Scholarship Program for Graduate Degrees. The program aims to offer 1300 scholarships to international students from across the globe who wish to pursue either a Master’s or Doctoral degree in Korea.




2023 Global Korea Scholarship – Application Guidelines for Graduate Degrees

1. Program’s Objectives

The primary objective of the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is to provide international students with an opportunity to study at higher educational institutions in Korea and obtain academic degrees. This program seeks to deepen mutual friendship between Korea and participating countries while enhancing international education exchange.

It is worth noting that the Korean Government Scholarship Programs have been rebranded as the Global Korea Scholarship since 2010. As a result, the name has changed to GKS.

2. Programs and University

GKS 2023 i.e Global Korea Scholarship 2023 is not only offered for both Master’s Degree and Doctoral Degree but also for research programs.

This year, a total of 1,300 students will be invited to Korea to study under Global Korea Scholarship.

Since there are two tracks to apply for the GKS Scholarship, here is the quota reserved for each track.

5. Scholarship Information & Benefits

? Master’s Degree Program: 3 years
– 1 year of Korean language program + 2 years of degree program

?Doctoral Degree Program: 4 years
– 1 year of Korean language program + 3 years of degree program

? Research Program: 6 months or 1 year

Important Notes regarding Scholarship Period

– Research program scholars and scholars who obtained TOPIK level 5 or 6 will be exempt from a Korean language program

– Those who receive TOPIK level 5 or 6 within the first 6 months of the Korean language program will be exempt from the remaining 6-month language program and must start their degree program in the following semester (March 2024)

5) Eligibility to apply for GKS 2023

The eligibility criteria for the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) program for Graduate Degrees are as follows:

Nationality:

  • Applicants must be citizens of countries that have been designated by the National Institute for International Education Development (NIIED) to participate in the GKS program.
  • The applicant’s parents or legal guardians must hold citizenship from a country other than Korea. If the applicant or their parent has dual citizenship, including Korean citizenship and citizenship of another country, they are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants and their parents who had previously held Korean citizenship must submit documentation issued by the Korean government that proves their renunciation of Korean citizenship.
  • If an applicant’s citizenship changes during the selection process, they will be excluded from the evaluation, except for the Research and Development (R&D) program.
  • Overseas Korean applicants holding Japanese citizenship are eligible to apply if their parents hold permanent residency permits in Japan while holding Korean citizenship.
  • Applicants from all countries can apply to the R&D program.

Degree Requirements:

  • Master’s Program Applicant: Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree or have an educational level equivalent to or higher than a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Doctoral Program Applicant: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or have an educational level equivalent to or higher than a Master’s degree.
  • Research Program Applicant: Applicants must have received an invitation from one of the partner universities and meet the following criteria:
    • Postdoctoral Research Program: Applicants must hold a Doctoral degree by February 28, 2023.
    • Professor Exchange Program: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree and must currently be teaching at a university as a professor.
    • Program for Education, Science, Culture, International Cooperation Professionals: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree and must be a professional in the field of Education, Science, Culture, or International Cooperation. ? Applicants must have obtained the required degree (minimum level of education indicated above) by February 28, 2023.

In summary, to be eligible for the GKS program, applicants must be citizens of designated countries, hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent, and meet specific requirements depending on the type of program they apply for. Dual citizens holding Korean citizenship are not eligible, and applicants whose citizenship changes during the selection process will be excluded, except for the R&D program.

Global Korea Scholarship 2023 i.e GKS 2023

Grades:

To be eligible for the GKS program, applicants must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) that meets at least one of the following conditions:

  • For doctoral degree program applicants, the CGPA of their previous degree program, which would be a master’s degree program for example, must be higher than 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5, or 3.23/5.0.
  • Applicants must also have a score percentile of 80% or higher on a 100-point scale or be ranked within the top 20% of their class.
  • Applicants must submit an academic transcript that shows their CGPA or ranking information.

Applicants must be under 40 years of age, born after September 1, 1983, to be eligible for the GKS program. However, academic professors in one of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) recipients who are under 45 years of age, born after September 1, 1978, can apply.

What is GKS Scholarship?

The goal of the Global Korea Scholarship is to give international students the chance to pursue academic degrees at higher education facilities in Korea. This will increase international educational exchange and strengthen ties between Korea and the participating nations.

For the year 2022, 1378 international students from 154 countries, for the degree (Master’s & Doctoral) and non-degree research programs are invited to study in Korea for FREE.

1 – Program Objective

The Global Korea Scholarship is intended to give international students with opportunity to pursue academic degrees at higher educational institutions in Korea, thereby enhancing international education exchange and deepening mutual goodwill between Korea and participating nations.

1b – Scholarship Benefits

– Upon arrival, NIIED will provide 20,000 KRW per month in private insurance premium until scholars are enrolled in health insurance. After enrollment, NIIED will provide health insurance premiums of a standard amount (55,630 KRW).

– Korean proficiency grants (who has TOPIK level 5 or 6), research support fee, tuition, thesis printing fee, degree completion grants are given to GKS scholars in the degree program only.

And the wait is over… GKS Scholarship 2022 for Undergraduate Program has been announced for both Embassy Track and University track. This is your chance to apply as you may be among the lucky ones to get selected and study in Korea for free.

The Korean government has invited 125 international students from 67 different nations to study in Korea for a bachelor’s degree. Any candidate must successfully complete the first screening process provided by the Korean Embassy in his or her place of origin in order to be selected as a GKS recipient.

[University Track]

The Korean government is inviting 60 international students from 72 countries to study in Korea for a bachelor’s degree (Natural Science and Engineering department), as well as 35 international students from 17 countries to study for an associate degree. Applicants who are expected to graduate by February 28th, 2022 must first submit a certificate of expected graduation

How to increase selection chances:

According to the official guidelines published on the StudyinKorea website, the preference will be given to the following students. (Please note that it does not mean you shouldn’t apply if you don’t meet these criteria)

  • In cases where the overall scores are the same in the 1st round of selection (both embassy and university track), the following applicants will be chosen over the other candidates:

GKS Scholarship 2026 Graduate Eligibility Criteria

Nationality
Applicants must be citizens of countries designated by NIIED. Neither the applicant nor their parents can hold Korean citizenship, including dual citizenship with Korea.

Education Level
Applicants must hold the required previous degree or be expected to graduate before the deadline. Final graduation certificates and transcripts must be submitted after selection if applying with expected graduation status.

  • Applicants who are expected to graduate by July 31, 2026 can also apply for the program with a certificate of expected graduation and grades for all completed semesters at the time of application. Such applicants must submit their official graduation certificate (or diploma) and final academic transcript to GKS Center, NIIED by July 31, 2026. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of your acceptance.

Academic Grades
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of the entire curriculum from the previous degree program * must meet one of the conditions below;

*For example, previous degree for a doctoral degree program applicant is a master’s degree program

  1. Score percentile should be 80% or above on a 100-point scale or be ranked within the top 20% within one’s class.
  2. CGPA must be above 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5 or 3.23/5.0

*Applicants must submit an academic transcript with CGPA or ranking information.

* If a transcript does not provide CGPA in any one of the accepted GPA scales (4.0, 4.3, 4.5, 5.0 or 100 point scale), then the applicant must submit a transcript converted into one of the above GPA scales as a supplementary document.

*Applicants who are expected to graduate must submit their grades for all completed semesters at the time of application

Age Limit
Generally, applicants must be under 40 years old. In some cases, professors from ODA-recipient countries may apply up to age 45.

Language Ability
Applicants with Korean language proficiency (such as TOPIK) may receive advantages, though it is not always mandatory depending on the track.

Health Condition
Applicants must be physically and mentally fit to complete the full duration of study in Korea.

  • Embassy track applicants must apply to only ONE program among General, and Overseas Korean/ Adoptee program
  • University track applicants must apply to only ONE program among General, R-GKS, Research, R&D or Global Network program

    * However, applicants recommended by International Organization may apply to only one program among General, R-GKS, Research, R&D, or Global Network under the University track, excluding the research program
  • University track applicants (including applicants recommended by the International Organization) must apply to ONE university and ONE department

Duplicate submissions are not permitted and will be excluded from the evaluation. If identified at any stage of the selection process, the scholarship will be revoked.

* One cannot revise the university after the final decision is made

This year Embassy will recommend 6 aspiring candidates for the Global Korea Scholarship 2025 for Pakistan to NIIED.

  • Embassy Track: 6 slots
  • University Track: 14 slots

Scholarship Duration

  • Doctoral Degree Program: 4 years (1 year Korean language program + 3 years regular degree program)
  • Master’s Degree Program: 3 years (1 year Korean language program + 2 years regular degree program)
  • Research Program: 6 months or 1 year

Application Deadline

  • Last Date to Apply: February 28, 2025 (Friday)
  • Late applications will not be accepted.

GKS 2025 Benefits for Graduate Program

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is a fully funded program that allows international students to study at top universities in South Korea. It promotes global education exchange and strengthens friendships between Korea and participating countries. This scholarship covers tuition, living expenses, and more, making it a great opportunity for students to pursue higher education in Korea while experiencing its rich culture.

1. Airfare

  • Economy class flight ticket (actual expense covered)

2. Tuition Fees

  • Up to 5 million KRW (admission fee covered by the university)

3. Korean Language Training Fees

  • 5.2 million KRW for four quarters

4. Monthly Allowance

  • Korean Language Program: 14,160,000 KRW per year
  • Degree Program: 15,720,000 KRW per year
  • Research Program: 19,800,000 KRW per year

5. Additional Support for Korean Proficiency

  • Scholars who start their program with TOPIK Level 5 or 6 will receive a Korean Proficiency Grant.
  • Exceptions: This grant does not apply to scholars in the Global Network Program, Research Program, current academic professors in 100% English-taught programs, or those in the IRTS Korean Language Program who achieve TOPIK/TOPIK IBT Level 3 or higher.
