GKS Scholarship 2025 Objective
The Global Korea Scholarship aka GKS Scholarship 2025 offers international students the chance to study at top universities in Korea, helping them pursue academic degrees while promoting global educational exchange and fostering stronger friendships between Korea and participating nations.

Bachelor’s Degree Program: 5-7 years 1 year of Korean language training + 4~6 years of degree program

Eligibility Criteria for GKS Scholarship 2025
Nationality: Applicants must be citizens of countries designated by NIIED and invited to participate in the GKS program.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree Program: Open to students who have graduated (or will graduate) from high school or an associate degree program.
Associate Degree Program: Open to students who have graduated (or will graduate) from high school. Note: Applicants who expect to graduate must submit a certificate of expected graduation during the application process. If selected in the first round, they must submit their official graduation certificate by December 31, 2024.
GPA Requirements: Applicants must meet one of the following:
A score percentile of 80% or higher on a 100-point scale, or ranking in the top 20% of their class.
A cumulative GPA of at least 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5, or 3.23/5.0.
Age: Applicants must be under 25 years old (born after March 1, 2000).
Health: All applicants must be in good physical and mental health to complete their studies in Korea.
Note: Applicants with a bachelor’s degree are not eligible. Those with an associate degree can only apply for a bachelor’s program.

GKS Scholarship 2025 Undergraduate Quota
This year, a total of 367 students from around the world will be invited to participate in the GKS Scholarship 2025 Undergraduate for both Associate and Bachelor’s degree programs.
Of these, 87 students will be selected through the Embassy Track, while 280 students will be chosen through the University Track.

Applicants can select up to THREE different universities.
You cannot choose three different departments within the same university.
At least one of the selected universities must be a Type B university.
If you list a Type A university in the Type B section, your application might be excluded from evaluation.

Applicants must choose just ONE university in their application.
Additional Points for GKS Scholarship 2025:
Applicants with a TOPIK level 3 or higher will earn extra points, making up 10% of the total points available.
Direct descendants of Korean War veterans who served in the Korean War as foreign military personnel will receive an additional 5% of the total points.
Extra points will be awarded based on proficiency in Korean and English:
Korean: Points are given according to the level of the TOPIK certificate.
English: Points are given based on scores from valid English proficiency tests (TOEFL, IELTS).

Important Notes regarding Scholarship Benefits
– If a GKS scholar withdraws from the scholarship within the first 3 months after the enrollment to their university, one MUST return the full scholarship amount that he or she has received after being selected as a GKS scholar (entry airfare, settlement allowance, monthly allowance, tuition, etc.)
– Even if 3 months have passed since entering Korea, if the scholarship status changes, part of the already paid scholarship can be refunded or can be deducted from the next payment
– Korean Language Training Fee and Korean Proficiency Grants are not provided to GKS scholars in Research program
– Korean Language Training Fee is not provided to GKS scholars in Global Network program

Applicants who are expected to graduate by July 31st, 2024 can also apply for the program with a certificate of expected graduation.

1. Program’s Objectives

The eligibility criteria for the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) program for Graduate Degrees are as follows:
Nationality:
Applicants must be citizens of countries that have been designated by the National Institute for International Education Development (NIIED) to participate in the GKS program.
The applicant’s parents or legal guardians must hold citizenship from a country other than Korea. If the applicant or their parent has dual citizenship, including Korean citizenship and citizenship of another country, they are not eligible to apply.
Applicants and their parents who had previously held Korean citizenship must submit documentation issued by the Korean government that proves their renunciation of Korean citizenship.
If an applicant’s citizenship changes during the selection process, they will be excluded from the evaluation, except for the Research and Development (R&D) program.
Overseas Korean applicants holding Japanese citizenship are eligible to apply if their parents hold permanent residency permits in Japan while holding Korean citizenship.
Applicants from all countries can apply to the R&D program.
Degree Requirements:
Master’s Program Applicant: Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree or have an educational level equivalent to or higher than a Bachelor’s degree.

Research Program Applicant: Applicants must have received an invitation from one of the partner universities and meet the following criteria:
Postdoctoral Research Program: Applicants must hold a Doctoral degree by February 28, 2023.
Professor Exchange Program: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree and must currently be teaching at a university as a professor.
Program for Education, Science, Culture, International Cooperation Professionals: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree and must be a professional in the field of Education, Science, Culture, or International Cooperation. ? 1 – Program Objective
The Global Korea Scholarship is intended to give international students with opportunity to pursue academic degrees at higher educational institutions in Korea, thereby enhancing international education exchange and deepening mutual goodwill between Korea and participating nations.
1b – Scholarship Benefits
– Upon arrival, NIIED will provide 20,000 KRW per month in private insurance premium until scholars are enrolled in health insurance. After enrollment, NIIED will provide health insurance premiums of a standard amount (55,630 KRW).
– Korean proficiency grants (who has TOPIK level 5 or 6), research support fee, tuition, thesis printing fee, degree completion grants are given to GKS scholars in the degree program only.

e) Health
All applicants must be in good health, both mentally and physically, to study in Korea for the full duration of the program.

All the applicants need to meet all of the following eligibility criteria:
a) Nationality:
All applicants and their parents should not have a KOREAN nationality.
b) Level of Education:
Applicants who graduated (or are expected to graduate) from a high school can apply for a Bachelor’s degree program or an Associate degree program.
Applicants who are expected to graduate by February 28th, 2022 must first submit a certificate of expected graduation
c) Grades:
All applicants must have a score percentile of atleast 80%

e) Health:

How to increase selection chances:
According to the official guidelines published on the StudyinKorea website, the preference will be given to the following students. (Please note that it does not mean you shouldn’t apply if you don’t meet these criteria)
In cases where the overall scores are the same in the 1st round of selection (both embassy and university track), the following applicants will be chosen over the other candidates: ? Academic Grades Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of the entire curriculum from the previous degree program * must meet one of the conditions below;
*For example, previous degree for a doctoral degree program applicant is a master’s degree program
Score percentile should be 80% or above on a 100-point scale or be ranked within the top 20% within one’s class.
CGPA must be above 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5 or 3.23/5.0

Age Limit Generally, applicants must be under 40 years old. In some cases, professors from ODA-recipient countries may apply up to age 45.
Language Ability Applicants with Korean language proficiency (such as TOPIK) may receive advantages, though it is not always mandatory depending on the track.
Health Condition Applicants must be physically and mentally fit to complete the full duration of study in Korea.

University track applicants must apply to only ONE program among General, R-GKS, Research, R&D or Global Network program

University track applicants (including applicants recommended by the International Organization) must apply to ONE university and ONE department
Duplicate submissions are not permitted and will be excluded from the evaluation. If identified at any stage of the selection process, the scholarship will be revoked.
How to apply for GKS Scholarship 2026 Graduate Program
Embassy Track Applicants usually submit their application through the official Study in Korea system by creating an account, completing the application form, and uploading all required documents. After the first screening, shortlisted candidates may need to submit original or embassy verified documents. Official website link: www.studyinkorea.go.kr
University Track Applicants submit their documents directly to GKS designated universities, typically by post or in person, depending on each university’s instructions and deadlines.
Additional Important Notes for Applicants
Additional Documents Some universities or departments may request extra materials such as portfolios or additional certificates. These must be submitted directly to the university.
University Specific Eligibility Each university or department may set extra eligibility or admission conditions, so applicants must carefully review the specific requirements of their chosen program.
TOPIK Requirement All selected GKS scholars are generally required to achieve at least TOPIK Level 3 during or after the Korean language program to proceed to their degree program. Some departments may require higher levels such as TOPIK Level 4.
Enrollment Timing Applicants must also check enrollment schedules and semester start rules set by each university or department, especially if their Korean language program schedule changes or is delayed.

Selection Timeline with important dates and deadlines
It is each applicant’s responsibility to check important notices posted on “Study in Korea” website. NIIED do not inform applicants individually of each round of selection results
Final results for Embassy Track applicants will be available on Study in Korea (My Page).
– Review of Qualification: Selection committee will conduct document examination (citizenship, level of education, academic grades, etc.) and verify whether an applicant is qualified for the program
– Review of Competency: Selection committee will evaluate each applicant’s competency through document examination and oral interview*
* There is no oral interview in the second round of selection at NIIED
– Vacancies: In both embassy and university track, if vacancies occur in the second round of selection at NIIED due to insufficient number of recommended candidates or due to the candidate’s ineligibility, candidates from other countries may fill the vacancy
– Authenticity Check: If necessary, NIIED may inquire about the facts within the application materials to the relevant governments and universities

Eligibility for GKS Scholarship 2026 (Undergraduate)
Nationality: Applicants must be citizens of NIIED-designated countries. Parents must also not hold Korean citizenship. Dual citizens with Korean nationality are not eligible. UIC program is open to all nationalities.
Education:
Bachelor’s program: High school graduates (or expected to graduate by Dec 31, 2025).
Associate program: High school graduates (or expected to graduate by Dec 31, 2025).
Applicants with a bachelor’s degree cannot apply.
Expected graduates must submit proof of graduation by Dec 31, 2025.
Grades:
At least 80% or top 20% of class, OR
Minimum CGPA: 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5, or 3.23/5.0.
Age: Must be under 25 years old (born after March 1, 2001).
Health: Must be in good physical and mental health.
Restrictions:
Graduates (or expected graduates) of Korean high schools, associate degree programs, or online Korean programs are not eligible.
Applicants who previously received a Korean government scholarship for a degree are not eligible.
Duplicate applications to multiple tracks/universities are not allowed.
