The NIIED (The National Institute for International Education Development) has published the application guidelines for the GKS Scholarship 2023 for the United States for Graduate Degrees. Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is also known as the 2023 Korean Government Scholarship Program, which seeks to grant 1300 scholarships to students from all over the world who want to pursue a Master’s or doctoral degree in Korea.

Scholarship Period

Master’s Degree Program: 3 years
– 1 year of Korean language program + 2 years of degree program

Doctoral Degree Program: 4 years
– 1 year of Korean language program + 3 years of degree program

Research Program: 6 months or 1 year

Important Notes regarding Scholarship Period

– Research program scholars and scholars who obtained TOPIK level 5 or 6 will be exempt from a Korean language program

– Those who receive TOPIK level 5 or 6 within the first 6 months of the Korean language program will be exempt from the remaining 6-month language program and must start their degree program in the following semester (March 2024)

5. Eligibility for GKS Scholarship 2023 for the United States

List of Eligibility criteria for the 2023 Korean Government Scholarship Program for Graduate Degrees:

  • Nationality: Applicants and their parents must not have Korean citizenship.
  • Age: Applicants must be born after September 1, 1983, and under 40 years of age.
  • Degree Requirements: Applicants must hold or expect to earn a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree before February 28, 2023.
  • Grades: Applicants must maintain an overall grade point average(CGPA) equivalent to or higher than any ONE of the following: 2.64 on a 4.0 scale, 2.80 on a 4.3 scale, 2.91 on a 4.5 scale, 3.23 on a 5.0 scale, or score percentile(80% or above).
  • Health: Applicants must be in good mental and physical health to complete the program in Korea.
  • Preferences:
    • Applicants who have certified proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) may receive preference.
    • Descendants of Korean War veterans will receive an additional 5% of the total marks during the selection reviews.
    • Applicants who apply for majors in the field of Natural Science and Engineering may receive preference.

The “2023 Global Korea Scholarship” or the GKS Scholarship 2023is being offered by the Korean Embassy in New Delhi to Indian students who wish to complete their undergraduate studies in Korea.

GKS Scholarship 2023 India Quota:

As you are aware, there are two application tracks for the GKS Scholarship: the University Track and the Embassy Track.

A total of 200 students from around the world will be chosen for the class of 2023 using both the tracks.

Embassy Track:

When it comes to India, 2 students will be selected via Embassy Track.

University Track:

While in the University Track, there is no fixed quota for India or other countries. For example, a total of 12 students will be selected from the Southwest Asian countries

Track called UIC – University Industry Cooperation. And as mentioned early, there is no fixed quota for India.

Eligibility Criteria for Indians:

1. Must be an Indian Citizen.

2. Must be under 25 years of age (born after 1st March 1998).

3. High school graduates or expected to graduate by 28th February 2023. Applicants who are expected to graduate must submit the certificate of expected graduation at the time of applying.

4. Must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) equivalent to or higher than any ONE of the following from their high school.

  • Score percentile should be 80% or above on a 100-point scale or be ranked within the top 20% within one’s class
  • CGPA : 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5, 3.23/5.0

5. Must be in good health, both mentally and physically, to study in Korea for the full duration of the program.

What is GKS Scholarship?

The goal of the Global Korea Scholarship is to give international students the chance to pursue academic degrees at higher education facilities in Korea. This will increase international educational exchange and strengthen ties between Korea and the participating nations.

  • Associate degree program is for applicants who graduated (or are expected to graduate) from a high school

    Note:
    ? Applicants who are expected to graduate must first submit a certificate of expected graduation at the time of application. If such applicants pass the final round of selection, they must submit
    a graduation certificate (or a degree certificate) by February 28, 2023

3- Score (GPA)

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of the entire curriculum from the previous (degree) program must meet one of the two conditions below;
– Score percentile should be 80% or above on a 100-point scale or be ranked within the top 20% within one’s class
– CGPA must be equal to or above 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5 or 3.23/5.0

Must be under 25 years of age (born after March 1, 1998)

GKS Scholarship 2022 – Complete Guide

If studying in Korea for FREE is your dream, then this post is for you because the Government of South Korea in association with NIIED has announced the application guidelines of the 2022 GKS – Government Korea Scholarship Program (previously known as KGSP Scholarship) for Graduate Degrees.

For the year 2022, 1378 international students from 154 countries, for the degree (Master’s & Doctoral) and non-degree research programs are invited to study in Korea for FREE.

1 – Program Objective

The Global Korea Scholarship is intended to give international students with opportunity to pursue academic degrees at higher educational institutions in Korea, thereby enhancing international education exchange and deepening mutual goodwill between Korea and participating nations.

1b – Scholarship Benefits

– Upon arrival, NIIED will provide 20,000 KRW per month in private insurance premium until scholars are enrolled in health insurance. After enrollment, NIIED will provide health insurance premiums of a standard amount (55,630 KRW).

– Korean proficiency grants (who has TOPIK level 5 or 6), research support fee, tuition, thesis printing fee, degree completion grants are given to GKS scholars in the degree program only.

Currently, the GKS Scholarship is open for Masters Degree, Doctoral or Phd Degree and Research Program.

  • All documents must be submitted in English or Korean

– Embassy Track applicants can choose up to THREE different universities.

? (Attention!) Applicants may choose the same department for all three universities, but may NOT choose three different departments from a single university.

– Of the chosen universities, at least one university must be from Type B universities.

? (Attention!) If applicants fill out a Type A university in a Type B section, their application will be excluded from evaluation

– If applicants choose all three universities among highly competitive universities, even though they pass the 2nd round of selection, there will be no guarantee of final selection at the 3rd round.

? 33(2016), 34(2017), 41(2018), 39(2019), 52(2020), 53(2021) candidates were failed from all three universities in their final round of selection

[University Track]

– University track applicants should fill in ONE university in their application.

– Overseas Koreans.

– Applicants from low-income families or underprivileged background.

– Applicants who applied for a Natural science and engineering department in a Regional university*.

* Natural Science and Engineering department in a Regional University: Refer to “University Information (2022 GKS-G Available Departments for University Track (Regional, Natural Science and Engineering)” file

– Applicants who are currently teaching as a professor in a Natural science and engineering department or in one of the ODA recipient countries listed in section 4.

– Applicants who are applying for a “Postdoctoral Research Program” in a Natural science and engineering department.

– Applicants who submit a high score of English proficiency test (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS).

– Applicants who hold a TOPIK level 3 or above will be given additional points (10% of the total allocated points).

– Descendants of Korean War veterans will be given additional points (5% of the total allocated points)

IMPORTANT NOTICE: 2022 Global Korea Scholarship Application Graduate Degree Program

GKS Scholarship i.e Global Korea Scholarship (previously known as KGSP – Korean Government Scholarship Program) is one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world that allows scholars to study in Korea for FREE. GKS Scholarship 2022 is about to be announced for the Graduate Degree (Masters, Phd). This year, NIIED (National Institute for International Education) has announced a prior notice for all the aspiring students who are willing to apply for this scholarship.

“Dear Prospective Applicants of the 2022 GKS Graduate Program, NIIED would like to make a prior notice that starting from 2022 GKS-G program, we will only accept apostilled or consular confirmed documents for the following:

A) Proof of citizenship (for both applicant’s and their parents’)
: official certificate issued by the government such as birth certificate and/or family register

B) Certificate of graduation (Bachelor, Master, Doctoral degree)
: official graduation certificate (or diploma) issued by a university or a government
: official certificate of expected graduation (*for applicants who are expected to graduate)

C) Academic transcript (Bachelor, Master, Doctoral degree)
: official transcript issued by university

The official notice by the NIIED further states:

D) Proof of Age
: additional document issued by a government if none of the submitted documents indicate the
applicant’s date of birth

E) Proof of Overseas Korean, proof of Korean citizenship renunciation document, proof of Korean War
veteran’s descendant, proof of Korean adoptee document
: only applicable for relevant applicants

F) Certificate of employment
: only applicable for Korean language teaching professionals

Important Notice (GKS 2022)

  • All certificates listed above must be authenticated by a Korean Consulate or apostilled before submission. Certificates with simple notarization will NOT be accepted.
  • Confirmation from a Foreign Ministry or a Ministry of Justice ONLY will not be accepted.

Embassy track applicants should submit ONE consular-authenticated (or apostilled) document and THREE photocopies of the consular-authenticated (or apostilled) document.

Optional Documents (GKS 2022)

Other optional documents such as certificate of Korean (TOPIK) or English proficiency test, copy of awards, etc. do not need to be authenticated, unless the document is written in a language other than Korean or English. All application documents that are written in
languages other than Korean or English must be accompanied with a certified translation.

Previous or current GKS Scholars who are applying for a higher degree program should submit original graduation certificate and academic transcript issue by their Korean universities without additional authentication.

GKS Scholarship 2022 – Undergraduate Program

And the wait is over… GKS Scholarship 2022 for Undergraduate Program has been announced for both Embassy Track and University track. This is your chance to apply as you may be among the lucky ones to get selected and study in Korea for free.
*Previously GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) was known as KGSP (Korean Government Scholarship Program).

[Embassy Track]

The Korean government has invited 125 international students from 67 different nations to study in Korea for a bachelor’s degree. Any candidate must successfully complete the first screening process provided by the Korean Embassy in his or her place of origin in order to be selected as a GKS recipient.

[University Track]

The Korean government is inviting 60 international students from 72 countries to study in Korea for a bachelor’s degree (Natural Science and Engineering department), as well as 35 international students from 17 countries to study for an associate degree. To be chosen as a GKS grantee, all applicants must successfully complete the allocated regional university’s first selection process.

Quota for Embassy Track

The quota reserve for Embassy Track for 2022 is 125. GKS Scholarship 2022 offers 1 seat for Pakistanis and 3 seats for India under this track.

Quota for University Track

The quota for university track 2022 is 60 seats and out of which a lot of countries will share 9 seats only.

Quota for Associate Degree

The quota for associate degree 2022 is 35 but unfortunately Pakistan is not eligible for this degree.

Please note that you can only apply through one track. You will be disqualified if you apply for this scholarship through both of these tracks. Both the tracks have a few differences (pros and cons) and it is totally up to you which track you want to choose.

Embassy Track:

Pros: You can select 3 universities of your choice.
Cons: The selection process has 3 rounds. (Embassy > NIIED > University)

University Track:

Pros: The selection process has 2 rounds. (University > NIIED)
Cons: You can select just 1 university.

How to increase selection chances:

According to the official guidelines published on the StudyinKorea website, the preference will be given to the following students. (Please note that it does not mean you shouldn’t apply if you don’t meet these criteria)

  • In cases where the overall scores are the same in the 1st round of selection (both embassy and university track), the following applicants will be chosen over the other candidates:
    ? The Overseas Koreans
    ? Those applicants who are from low-income families or underprivileged background
    ? The (Embassy track) Applicants who applied for a Natural Science and Engineering
    department in a Regional University
    ? (University track applicants who applied for an Associate degree) Winner of a national
    level competition on technical skills
  • In cases where the overall scores are the same in the 2nd round of selection (university track), the following applicants will be chosen over the other candidates:
    ? Who hold a TOPIK level 3 or above
    ? Overseas Koreans
    ? All the applicants from low-income families or underprivileged background
    ? The applicants with valid English proficiency certificate (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, etc.)

Deadline for GKS Scholarship 2022:

Application period: 14th Sep 2021- 30th Sep 2021

? Documents that arrive later than 30th Sep will not be considered under any circumstances. –

For Pakistani students:
Submit to Embassy of the Republic of Korea(Block 13, st. 29, Diplomatic Enclave 2, G-5/4, Islamabad, Pakistan) –

How to Submit:
Please submit 1 of consular authenticated document + 3 photocopies of the consular authenticated document (total 4 sets of documents) by post. –

GKS Scholarship for India- How to apply

Eligibility For Indian Students

The Global Korea Scholarship for India is for the following:

  1. All candidates MUST be Indian Citizens
  2. Korean citizens are NOT allowed
  3. Candidates must be under the age of 25, as of March 1st, 2021.
  4. All participants MUST be high school graduates. However, those awaiting their results may also apply. In that case, students should submit a certificate stating their expected graduation time.
  5. Proof of high school graduation certificate and all high school transcripts is MANDATORY.
  6. Students applying for the Undergraduate Program must have 80% grades and above.
  7. All candidates must be in GOOD medical health

GKS Scholarship- Korea’s fully funded platform
