GKS Scholarship 2026 Graduate Eligibility Criteria

Nationality
Applicants must be citizens of countries designated by NIIED. Neither the applicant nor their parents can hold Korean citizenship, including dual citizenship with Korea.

Education Level
Applicants must hold the required previous degree or be expected to graduate before the deadline. Final graduation certificates and transcripts must be submitted after selection if applying with expected graduation status.

All applicants must have obtained the required degree (as specified below) or must be expected to graduate by July 31, 2025.

  • Applicants who are expected to graduate by July 31, 2026 can also apply for the program with a certificate of expected graduation and grades for all completed semesters at the time of application. Such applicants must submit their official graduation certificate (or diploma) and final academic transcript to GKS Center, NIIED by July 31, 2026. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of your acceptance.

Academic Grades
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of the entire curriculum from the previous degree program * must meet one of the conditions below;

*For example, previous degree for a doctoral degree program applicant is a master’s degree program

  1. Score percentile should be 80% or above on a 100-point scale or be ranked within the top 20% within one’s class.
  2. CGPA must be above 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5 or 3.23/5.0

*Applicants must submit an academic transcript with CGPA or ranking information.

* If a transcript does not provide CGPA in any one of the accepted GPA scales (4.0, 4.3, 4.5, 5.0 or 100 point scale), then the applicant must submit a transcript converted into one of the above GPA scales as a supplementary document.

*Applicants who are expected to graduate must submit their grades for all completed semesters at the time of application

Age Limit
Generally, applicants must be under 40 years old. In some cases, professors from ODA-recipient countries may apply up to age 45.

Language Ability
Applicants with Korean language proficiency (such as TOPIK) may receive advantages, though it is not always mandatory depending on the track.

Health Condition
Applicants must be physically and mentally fit to complete the full duration of study in Korea.

Resctriction for GKS Scholarship 2026

Duplicate Submission

  • Embassy track candidates (including reserve candidates) who passed the first round of selection cannot apply again through a university track
  • Embassy track applicants must apply to only ONE program among General, and Overseas Korean/ Adoptee program
  • University track applicants must apply to only ONE program among General, R-GKS, Research, R&D or Global Network program

    * However, applicants recommended by International Organization may apply to only one program among General, R-GKS, Research, R&D, or Global Network under the University track, excluding the research program
  • University track applicants (including applicants recommended by the International Organization) must apply to ONE university and ONE department

Duplicate submissions are not permitted and will be excluded from the evaluation. If identified at any stage of the selection process, the scholarship will be revoked.

* One cannot revise the university after the final decision is made

GKS Scholarship 2025 Graduate Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) 2025 for graduate studies, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Nationality

  • Applicants must be citizens of a country designated by the NIIED that is invited to participate in the GKS program.

2. Education Level

  • Applicants must have completed the required degree by the application deadline or be expected to graduate by July 31, 2025.
  • If you’re expected to graduate by July 31, 2025, you can apply with a certificate of expected graduation and grades from completed semesters. However, you must submit your official graduation certificate and final transcript to the GKS Center, NIIED by July 31, 2025. Failing to do so will cancel your acceptance.

3. Academic Requirements

  • Applicants must meet the following Grade Point Average (GPA) conditions from their previous degree program:
    • 80% or higher on a 100-point scale or be ranked in the top 20% of your class.
    • CGPA requirements:
      • 2.64/4.0
      • 2.80/4.3
      • 2.91/4.5
      • 3.23/5.0

4. Age

  • Applicants must be under 40 years old (born after September 1, 1985).
  • Current academic professors from Official Development Assistance (ODA) recipient countries can apply if they are under 45 years old (born after September 1, 1980).

5. Health

  • All applicants must be in good physical and mental health to study in Korea for the entire duration of the scholarship.

Additional Points for GKS Scholarship 2024 Graduate

  • Applicants who hold a TOPIK level 3 or above will be given additional points (10% of the total allocated points)
  • Direct descendants of Korean War veterans who participated in the Korean War as a foreign military will be given additional points (5% of the total allocated points)

Additional points for Korean/English Language Proficiency

Applicants will receive additional points based on language proficiency in Korean and English

  • Korean: Points will be given to applicants with valid TOPIK certificate based on their TOPIK level
  • English: Points will be given to applicants with valid English proficiency certificates based on their test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.)

There are two tracks – GKS Embassy Track vs University Track

1?? Embassy Track

  • Students apply through the South Korean Embassy in their home country.
  • Higher competition but allows applying to multiple universities.

2?? University Track

  • Students apply directly to designated Korean universities.
  • Each university has a specific quota and deadline.

Last year, the GKS Scholarship 2024 had a total of 2,200 slots, with 800 seats through the Embassy Track and 1,400 seats through the University Track. Expect a similar quota for GKS Scholarship 2025.

The Global Korea Scholarship aka GKS Scholarship 2025 offers international students the chance to study at top universities in Korea, helping them pursue academic degrees while promoting global educational exchange and fostering stronger friendships between Korea and participating nations.

Period of Scholarship

Bachelor’s Degree Program: 5-7 years
1 year of Korean language training + 4~6 years of degree program

  1. Nationality:
    Applicants must be citizens of countries designated by NIIED and invited to participate in the GKS program.
  2. Education:
    • Bachelor’s Degree Program: Open to students who have graduated (or will graduate) from high school or an associate degree program.
    • Associate Degree Program: Open to students who have graduated (or will graduate) from high school.
      Note: Applicants who expect to graduate must submit a certificate of expected graduation during the application process. If selected in the first round, they must submit their official graduation certificate by December 31, 2024.
  3. GPA Requirements:
    Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • A score percentile of 80% or higher on a 100-point scale, or ranking in the top 20% of their class.
    • A cumulative GPA of at least 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5, or 3.23/5.0.
  4. Age:
    Applicants must be under 25 years old (born after March 1, 2000).
  5. Health:
    All applicants must be in good physical and mental health to complete their studies in Korea.

Note: Applicants with a bachelor’s degree are not eligible. Those with an associate degree can only apply for a bachelor’s program.

This year, a total of 367 students from around the world will be invited to participate in the GKS Scholarship 2025 Undergraduate for both Associate and Bachelor’s degree programs.

Of these, 87 students will be selected through the Embassy Track, while 280 students will be chosen through the University Track.

  • You cannot choose three different departments within the same university.
  • At least one of the selected universities must be a Type B university.
  • If you list a Type A university in the Type B section, your application might be excluded from evaluation.

[University Track]

  • Applicants must choose just ONE university in their application.

Additional Points for GKS Scholarship 2025:

  • Applicants with a TOPIK level 3 or higher will earn extra points, making up 10% of the total points available.
  • Direct descendants of Korean War veterans who served in the Korean War as foreign military personnel will receive an additional 5% of the total points.
  • Extra points will be awarded based on proficiency in Korean and English:
    • Korean: Points are given according to the level of the TOPIK certificate.
    • English: Points are given based on scores from valid English proficiency tests (TOEFL, IELTS).

GKS Scholarship at KDI – Global Network Program Scholarship

We are thrilled to introduce the Global Korea Scholarship GKS 2024 at the KDI School of Public Policy and Management called Global Network Program. This program is a unique initiative that aims to nurture tomorrow’s leaders in international cooperation through a comprehensive curriculum spanning International Cooperation, Korean Studies, and Data Science.

KDI School’s newly launched Global Network Program is sponsored by NIIED, which melds together 3 different areas into a single, 1.5-year master’s degree program

While the three key disciplines are required, a student may choose the major and the specific area of study within the selected major.

Benefits of Global Network Program at KDI School

Candidates who receive an admission offer will automatically be eligible for the GKS Global Network scholarship, which includes the following benefits, subject to maintaining the necessary academic standards:

Students are required to apply for one major and one 1st concentration within the selected major. All students will take Data Science for Public Policy and Management as their 2nd concentration.

Study length:

  • 1.5-year residential, on-campus learning. Students are expected to complete both the coursework and the research project within the 1.5-year residential period
  • Graduation requirements: 39 credits including capstone project.
