We are pleased to announce that the applications for the GKS Scholarship 2026 i.e Global Korea Scholarship 2026 are open now and here is your chance to pursue your studies in South Korea for free.

All applicants are strongly encouraged to review the guidelines thoroughly before preparing their applications.

Starting this year, every applicant must create an online account on the Study in Korea website and submit their application online.

Please note: Some Embassy Tracks may not accept online submissions. Applicants should check directly with the respective embassy or consulate to confirm their submission process.

What is GKS Scholarship 2026

The Global Korea Scholarship 2026 (GKS Scholarship 2026) is one of the most prestigious fully funded scholarships in the world, giving international students the chance to pursue higher education in South Korea. – 1 year of Korean language training + 4~6 years of degree program

– 1 year of Korean language training + 2~3 years of degree program

Duration of GKS Scholarship 2026
  • Applicants who submitted TOPIK level 5 or 6 will be exempt from a Korean language program

In 2026, a total of 280 students from around the world will be invited to participate in the GKS Scholarship 2026 Undergraduate for both Associate and Bachelor’s degree programs.

Of these, 150 students will be selected through the Embassy Track, while 130 students will be chosen through the University Track.

  • For the General and Overseas Korean program of the Embassy Track, applicants choose up to THREE different universities in any order of preference and MUST apply to at least one of the universities from Type B.
  • For the R-GKS program of the Embassy Track, applicants can choose up to TWO different universities from Type B universities.

  • The UIC Program under University Track provides customized curriculum and field experience through industry-university cooperation focused on the fields of natural science and engineering.

Application Method for GKS Scholarship 2026

Step 1: Create account and apply through the Study in Korea website (www.studyinkorea.go.kr)

Step 2: After registering membership on the website, proceed with the application process by filling out the required sections and uploading the necessary documents.


Step 3) If a university requires additional documents (e.g., portfolio), applicants must submit those materials directly to the university

  • Applicants must check additional restrictions or eligibility set by each degree university
  • Please check if there is any additional eligibility set by each university/department

Eligibility for GKS Scholarship 2026 (Undergraduate)

  • Nationality: Applicants must be citizens of NIIED-designated countries. Parents must also not hold Korean citizenship. Dual citizens with Korean nationality are not eligible. UIC program is open to all nationalities.
  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s program: High school graduates (or expected to graduate by Dec 31, 2025).
    • Associate program: High school graduates (or expected to graduate by Dec 31, 2025).
    • Applicants with a bachelor’s degree cannot apply.
    • Expected graduates must submit proof of graduation by Dec 31, 2025.
  • Grades:
    • At least 80% or top 20% of class, OR
    • Minimum CGPA: 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5, or 3.23/5.0.
  • Age: Must be under 25 years old (born after March 1, 2001).
  • Health: Must be in good physical and mental health.
  • Restrictions:
    • Graduates (or expected graduates) of Korean high schools, associate degree programs, or online Korean programs are not eligible.
    • Applicants who previously received a Korean government scholarship for a degree are not eligible.
    • Duplicate applications to multiple tracks/universities are not allowed.

  • The first round of selection institutions will determine whether or not to accept submitted documents.

Evaluation Process for GKS Scholarship 2026

1. Main Evaluation Areas

  • Qualification Review: The committee checks documents to confirm eligibility (citizenship, education level, academic performance, etc.).
  • Competency Review: Applicants are evaluated through their documents and an oral interview to measure potential and suitability.

2. Extra Points

  • TOPIK Level 3 or higher: +10% bonus points
  • Descendants of Korean War veterans (foreign military): +5% bonus points
  • Applicants to science & engineering fields: +5% bonus points

3. Language Proficiency Scores

Official test results in Korean (TOPIK) or English (TOEFL iBT, IELTS) can add points (must be issued within 2 years of NIIED’s announcement):

  • If no language score is submitted, the personal statement and study plan will be reviewed instead.

Evaluation Preferences

During the selection process, preference may be given to:

  • Overseas Koreans
  • Applicants from low-income families or underprivileged backgrounds
  • Applicants applying to science and engineering departments
  • Associate degree applicants who have won a national-level technical skills competition
  • Applicants with high scores in English proficiency tests (TOEFL, IELTS)
  • Applicants whose chosen major is connected to regional RISE plans or specialized industries
  • Applicants recommended by metropolitan or provincial government heads (mayors or governors)

IMPORTANT NOTICE: 2022 Global Korea Scholarship Application Graduate Degree Program

GKS Scholarship i.e Global Korea Scholarship (previously known as KGSP – Korean Government Scholarship Program) is one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world that allows scholars to study in Korea for FREE. GKS Scholarship 2022 is about to be announced for the Graduate Degree (Masters, Phd). This year, NIIED (National Institute for International Education) has announced a prior notice for all the aspiring students who are willing to apply for this scholarship.

The official statement by NIIED goes by:


“Dear Prospective Applicants of the 2022 GKS Graduate Program, NIIED would like to make a prior notice that starting from 2022 GKS-G program, we will only accept apostilled or consular confirmed documents for the following:

A) Proof of citizenship (for both applicant’s and their parents’)
: official certificate issued by the government such as birth certificate and/or family register

B) Certificate of graduation (Bachelor, Master, Doctoral degree)
: official graduation certificate (or diploma) issued by a university or a government
: official certificate of expected graduation (*for applicants who are expected to graduate)

C) Academic transcript (Bachelor, Master, Doctoral degree)
: official transcript issued by university

The official notice by the NIIED further states:

D) Proof of Age
: additional document issued by a government if none of the submitted documents indicate the
applicant’s date of birth

E) Proof of Overseas Korean, proof of Korean citizenship renunciation document, proof of Korean War
veteran’s descendant, proof of Korean adoptee document
: only applicable for relevant applicants

F) Certificate of employment
: only applicable for Korean language teaching professionals

Important Notice (GKS 2022)

  • All certificates listed above must be authenticated by a Korean Consulate or apostilled before submission. Certificates with simple notarization will NOT be accepted.
  • Confirmation from a Foreign Ministry or a Ministry of Justice ONLY will not be accepted.

Certificates Language (GKS 2022)

Certificates that are written either in Korean or English
? Submit with an authentication by a Korean Consulate or with an apostille.


Certificates that are written in languages other than Korean or English
? A certified translation must be accompanied with an original document. An original (or a certified true copy of the original) document must be authenticated by a Korean Consulate or be apostilled.

Guidelines for Embassy Track Applicant

Embassy track applicants should submit ONE consular-authenticated (or apostilled) document and THREE photocopies of the consular-authenticated (or apostilled) document.

Optional Documents (GKS 2022)

Other optional documents such as certificate of Korean (TOPIK) or English proficiency test, copy of awards, etc. do not need to be authenticated, unless the document is written in a language other than Korean or English. All application documents that are written in
languages other than Korean or English must be accompanied with a certified translation.

Previous GKS Scholars

Previous or current GKS Scholars who are applying for a higher degree program should submit original graduation certificate and academic transcript issue by their Korean universities without additional authentication.

This notice is to provide prospective applicants with appropriate time to prepare the required documents since we are aware that certain documents require lead time to be authenticated in some countries.
